La historia dice que The Clash resignó las ganancias de su cuarto álbum para poder editar tres discos al precio de dos y así, evitar poner el riesgo el presupuesto de sus seguidores. Fue el primero en el que todos los miembros de la banda cantaron e incluyó algunas versiones dub a cargo de Mikey Dread. Se llamó Sandinista por el Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, que un año previo a la grabación había derrocado al dictador Anastasio Somoza.
